Date:

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that the death toll from Wednesday’s devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area has reached 111.

The flooding, triggered by hours of intense rainfall, submerged over 50 residential homes in the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities, trapping many residents.

Abdullahi Arah, Director-General of NSEMA, said local divers, volunteers, and agency operatives, with support from the local government, managed to rescue a woman and her two children during the operation.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), after a thorough search and rescue assessment, confirmed the updated fatality figure and reported that approximately 5,000 residents have been displaced.

Husseini Isah, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Niger State, provided the update following further field assessments.

In response to the disaster, President Bola Tinubu on Friday directed NEMA and security agencies to scale up rescue and relief efforts in the affected communities.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a prolonged 2025 rainy season in some parts of the country, with rainfall expected to last between 250 and 290 days.

Annual rainfall totals could range from 405 mm in the far north to as much as 3,010 mm in coastal areas.

Flooding has become an increasingly frequent and destructive phenomenon in Nigeria. In 2024, more than 4,000 people were displaced and 30 killed in Maiduguri, Borno State, following the collapse of the Alau Dam. Similarly, in 2022, flooding claimed 201 lives and displaced over 172,000 people across 16 states.
