Victor Boniface sparked conversation online after jokingly announcing he is retiring from international football with the Super Eagles.
The 24-year-old forward posted a message on Instagram suggesting he had retired from playing for Nigeria, stating he had “hung up his boots” on Friday.
This surprising post came just hours after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in a friendly match held in Moscow. Boniface featured for 61 minutes before being replaced by Tolu Arokodare, who later scored the equaliser.

In his now-deleted post, Boniface reflected on his brief time with the national team, sharing a message of appreciation.
“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot,” the post reads.
Shortly after deleting the message, the Bayer Leverkusen striker uploaded a humorous meme to his Instagram story, implying the retirement announcement was not to be taken seriously.
Known for his playful nature and humorous social media presence, Boniface has developed a reputation for sharing light-hearted content online.
He made his international debut for Nigeria on September 10, 2023, coming on as a 64th-minute substitute for Taiwo Awoniyi in a match against São Tomé and Príncipe.
Despite making several appearances, Boniface has yet to open his goal account for the Super Eagles, a fact that has drawn criticism from fans across social media platforms.
