APC dismisses rumours of Tinubu sidestepping Shettima for 2027

Date:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed speculation that President Bola Tinubu may replace Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Reacting to the rumours, the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, described the claims as baseless and politically motivated distractions.

“That’s the first time I’m hearing such,” Arodiogbu told The Punch.

“There is a strong and effective partnership between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.

“Shettima is a major pillar in this administration—intelligent, focused, and hands-on. These are just attempts to stir division.”

He noted that such speculation is typical as elections draw near, but emphasized that both leaders remain united and fully supported by the party.

Similarly, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, brushed off the claims, saying, “I am not aware, Sir.”

The rumours gained traction after 22 APC governors, alongside leaders of the National Assembly and top party officials, publicly endorsed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for 2027.

The endorsement, initiated by Imo State Governor and Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma, and seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, came during the APC National Summit at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also backed Tinubu’s re-election, citing his performance in office. The APC National Chairman, Dr. Umar Ganduje, later affirmed the party’s collective endorsement of Tinubu.

While the move was applauded in some APC circles, it sparked criticism both within and outside the party. Former APC presidential aspirant Charles Udeogaranya slammed the endorsement, accusing the party of suppressing internal democracy.

In a statement from Abuja, Udeogaranya warned that avoiding a competitive primary would shut out other potential candidates who might offer fresh ideas and better leadership.

The situation has fueled broader political speculation, with some suggesting Shettima could be dropped to satisfy regional political interests or widen Tinubu’s 2027 appeal.

Tensions have reportedly been rising in the North Central region, where political leaders have voiced frustration over perceived marginalization.

On April 5, the North-Central Renaissance Movement began high-level consultations nationwide, advocating for a presidential or vice-presidential slot for the region in 2027.

Led by Prof. Nghargbu K’tso, the group met with key political figures including former National Security Adviser Gen. Aliyu Gusau, Senator John Danboyi, and traditional rulers like the Onah of Abaji, Alhaji Musa Baba Yunusa.

“We are capable of leading—not just being led,” K’tso declared, urging the region to demand its constitutional share of power.

Adding to the conversation, APC Deputy National Organising Secretary Chidi Duru reaffirmed that there has been no official indication of any change to the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

“That decision ultimately rests with the President, but at this point, there’s no reason to believe a switch is being considered,” Duru said.
