The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed that Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, has been questioned at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters over allegations of assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
In a viral video, Ikwechegh was seen allegedly slapping Abuwatseya after the driver requested the delivery fee, questioning if the driver understood who he was dealing with. The lawmaker also reportedly threatened to “make the driver disappear” without repercussions.
Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, stated on Monday that an investigation is underway. Preliminary findings suggest the altercation arose during a package delivery at Ikwechegh’s residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, on October 27, 2024.
“The FCT Police Command has received a report regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alex Ikwechegh,” Adeh said. “Preliminary investigations indicate a dispute over delivery methods led to a physical altercation, during which Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly assaulted.”
The police expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for law enforcement authority, as he reportedly taunted the driver to contact the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, after the incident.
Adeh added, “Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.” The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
