NAF launches investigation into death of personnel in Bauchi

Date:

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has opened an investigation into the death of Corporal A. S. Wulumba, a personnel attached to its Bauchi Command, who reportedly died while being held in a guardroom.

According to family accounts, Wulumba was detained on May 4, 2025, allegedly for reporting late to his duty post.

His sister, Numdarai Wulumba, revealed that her brother had contacted her the same day to inform her of his detention.

She claimed his lateness was due to health issues, which he explained to his superiors—an explanation she said was ignored by his commanding officer.

Numdarai criticised the decision to confine him, noting that under military regulations, detention for minor infractions such as lateness should not exceed 24 hours without further disciplinary procedures.

“He should have faced a court-martial if necessary, not indefinite confinement. And now he’s gone,” she said tearfully.

Responding to the development, NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame confirmed the incident and expressed the Service’s condolences.

“The NAF deeply regrets to confirm the unfortunate passing of Corporal A. S. Wulumba. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Ejodame stated.

He announced that a board of inquiry has been convened to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the airman’s death.

“Losing any member of our personnel is a painful experience, and we remain committed to ensuring accountability and upholding the highest standards of welfare and discipline,” he added.
