Mayorkun’s latest album “Still the Mayor” finally released after brief delay

Date:

Mayorkun’s much-anticipated album officially launched on major streaming services in the early hours of Friday, after a slight postponement from its initially scheduled May 2 debut.

The confirmation came late Thursday evening through a post on Mayorkun’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, where he wrote, “’Still The Mayor’ arrives at midnight! Big ups to everyone who worked on this project with me. It’s a special one for many reasons.”

The 12-song collection includes notable collaborations with popular Afrobeats acts such as Fireboy DML, Davido, Rotimi, King Promise, Olivetheboy, and Gyakie.

Prior to the album’s release, Mayorkun had disclosed that Fireboy DML made two guest appearances on the album — a highlight contribution from the YBNL artist.

Tracks like “Lose Control” featuring King Promise, “Under The Canopy,” and “Therapist” with Fireboy DML have quickly gained attention, with social media users and critics already sharing reactions to the body of work.

Although originally scheduled for early May, the album was quietly pushed back with no official explanation from Mayorkun or his management.

This new project arrives more than three years after his second studio album, Back In Office, and nearly seven years since his breakthrough with The Mayor of Lagos, which earned both critical and commercial success.

Reflecting on the album, Mayorkun described it as a deeply personal expression of his artistic evolution and life journey.

“It’s still me, still the Mayor. But this time, I had more to say, more to express. Life’s been happening, and the music reflects that,” he stated in his 3MUSIC TV interview last Saturday.

With Still The Mayor, the singer reinforces his presence and relevance in the Afrobeats scene, underlining both his consistency and artistic growth.

The album’s release also marks his official return to the limelight after a relatively low-profile start to 2024, during which he focused more on touring and behind-the-scenes work.

Social media platforms have been abuzz since the drop, with fans praising the project’s sound diversity, mature storytelling, and Mayorkun’s refined lyricism.

Music analysts believe the album is poised to perform strongly on both local and international Afrobeats charts in the days ahead.

Mayorkun first gained recognition in 2016 under the DMW label led by Davido and has since established himself as a staple in Nigeria’s music scene, blending pop, highlife, and urban sounds to craft his distinctive style.
