NiMet warns of stormy weather across Nigeria this weekend

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast indicating stormy conditions expected to affect various regions from Saturday through Monday.

The meteorological service released its weekend outlook on Friday, projecting early morning storm activity on Saturday across several northern states including Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa.

The forecast indicates that later Saturday, rain-bearing thunderstorms will likely affect additional northern areas such as Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.

For the North-Central zone, morning storms are expected to impact Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, and Nasarawa during early Saturday hours.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau states.

“Southern regions will experience overcast skies with potential morning precipitation affecting Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

The agency projects scattered thunderstorms with rainfall across multiple southern states later Saturday, including Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers.

Sunday’s forecast shows morning thunderstorm potential across northern states of Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with afternoon storms expected over Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.

The North-Central region will see partly cloudy conditions with sunshine breaks, though early thunderstorms may affect Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau states.””In the Southern region, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States.”

“Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over most parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers State.”

Monday’s outlook indicates morning storms across northern areas of Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, with later rainfall expected over Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Kaduna, and Bauchi.

The North-Central zone will experience mixed cloud and sun conditions with storm potential over the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Niger, while afternoon storms may affect Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi.

“In the Southern region, cloudy atmosphere is expected with chances of morning rains over parts of Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Delta, and Bayelsa States.”

“Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over most parts of the region.”

The meteorological service advises members of the public to take safety measures as strong winds may accompany rainfall in thunderstorm-prone areas.

“Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.”

“Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
