The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into Alex Ikwechegh, the representative for Abia North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State, following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

During a plenary session on Tuesday, the House referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges after Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere raised a “point of privilege.”

Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), gained notoriety for slapping and verbally abusing Abuwatseya. A viral video captured the confrontation, in which Ikwechegh accused the driver of disrespect after being asked to approach the vehicle to collect his package.

This altercation took place on October 27 in the Maitama district of Abuja. Following the incident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command invited Ikwechegh for questioning.

In a subsequent statement, the lawmaker apologised to both Abuwatseya and the Nigerian public, expressing regret for his actions.

During the session, Ihonvbere emphasised the importance of protecting the image of the parliament, citing numerous calls and messages he received regarding the incident.

He urged lawmakers to be mindful of their conduct.

Ikwechegh later addressed the assembly, offering his apology and acknowledging that there was no justification for his behaviour, despite feeling provoked.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, noted that Ikwechegh displayed genuine remorse and stated that his apology was both emotional and heartfelt.

Kalu added that while public opinion had called for Ikwechegh’s immediate suspension, he would instead face the ethics committee for further review.
