Defections: Party intact, unshaken, says Akwa Ibom PDP

Date:

In the wake of Governor Umo Eno’s defection that sent shockwaves across Akwa Ibom’s political landscape on June 6, 2025, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state has finally broken its silence—reassuring supporters that the party remains firmly united and strategically focused.

In an official statement on behalf of the PDP, the State Publicity Secretary, Edwin Ebiese, addressed party faithful and supporters, expressing gratitude for their patience and unwavering loyalty.

“To the esteemed members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, it is with utmost respect and sincerity that I address you today,” Ebiese began.

“Following the June 6, 2025, defection, our party faithful have eagerly awaited our response. We appreciate the concern and loyalty that have characterized your wait.”

The defection, which observers say involved a senior political figure within the PDP, sparked concerns over the internal stability of the party in Akwa Ibom. However, Ebiese firmly dismissed any speculation of internal crisis or fragmentation within the party’s ranks.

“As prudent stewards of our party’s legacy and future, we deemed it wise and strategic to first engage in comprehensive internal consultations,” he stated. “This deliberate approach allowed us to convene with our party structure and stakeholders, ensuring alignment and informed decision-making before issuing any public statement.”

According to the statement, the PDP leadership undertook a series of consultative meetings with various organs of the party, beginning with the State Working Committee, then the Party Executive Committee (EXCO), Chapter Chairmen, and Ward Chairmen across the three Senatorial Districts of Eket, Ikot Ekpene, and Uyo.”

Additionally, we held a crucial meeting with the staff of the party secretariat, thereby covering the entire spectrum of our organizational hierarchy,” Ebiese added, emphasizing that these engagements recorded 100% attendance.

“These meetings provided a platform for introspection, problem-solving, and strategic recalibration, enabling us to address internal dynamics.”

The party spokesperson categorically declared the outcome of the deliberations, stating, “Our party remains 100% INTACT AND UNSHAKEN.”

While acknowledging the delay in responding to the situation publicly, Ebiese was quick to justify the approach, noting that strategic alignment and internal cohesion were paramount before any external communication.

“We apologize for any perceived delay in issuing this statement. However, we firmly believe that our decision to prioritize internal cohesion and strategic alignment was essential. Our public message now accurately reflects the collective opinion and resolve of our party structure.”

He further assured the public that the PDP is not only intact but preparing for a stronger and more focused future.

“As we continue to strategize for a stronger party, we will share our plans for further strengthening our party structure and advancing our mission in future communications. Rest assured that we are committed to building a robust and resilient party that will continue to serve the people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.”

In a rallying call to party loyalists, Ebiese reaffirmed the PDP’s core values and long-term objectives: “To our faithful members, supporters, and the general public, we reiterate our commitment to the principles of democracy and good governance. We remain steadfast in our resolve to work tirelessly towards the protection of our great party in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.”

According to political analysts, the statement marks a firm stand by the Akwa Ibom PDP amidst growing political realignments in the state and nationwide, as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections.
