Liverpool eye Getafe’s acquisition in bid to expand global football empire

Date:

Liverpool’s parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is reportedly considering an acquisition of Spanish club Getafe as part of its strategic efforts to build a global football network, similar to City Football Group’s multi-club model, according to Marca.

As a well-established La Liga side with a track record for nurturing talent and profiting from player development, Getafe presents an attractive opportunity for FSG to diversify its sporting portfolio and further entrench its footprint in European football.

Michael Edwards, who now oversees football operations at FSG, recently elaborated on Liverpool’s broader ambitions, saying: “We are committed to acquiring and overseeing an additional club, growing this area of the organization. Remaining competitive requires investment and expansion in our current football portfolio.”

A possible barrier to the proposed acquisition lies with Getafe’s president, Ángel Torres, who has expressed a desire to remain in control of the club until the ongoing stadium development is complete. The new stadium project is scheduled to be completed by December 2027.

Torres emphasized his long-term commitment in his own words: “I’ve given my word to my family. The day the construction is finished and the stadium is inaugurated, I’ll leave. I’ll try to find a replacement first so I can leave it in good hands. I’m not going to leave it to just anyone; it’s going to be difficult.”

FSG had previously shown interest in acquiring Málaga, but that endeavor did not come to fruition. The group is now hopeful that negotiations with Getafe will proceed more smoothly, especially given the club’s stable position in Spain’s top flight and its appeal from both a financial and sporting perspective.
