MultiChoice slashes DStv decoder price by 50% to win back customers

Date:

In a strategic move to expand its customer base and address declining user numbers, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50 per cent reduction in the cost of its DStv decoder.

The price has dropped from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the decision was part of efforts to show appreciation to loyal customers while increasing access to its entertainment offerings.

“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day. The ‘We Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans,” Ugbe stated.

According to him, the campaign seeks to broaden the appeal of the platform by spotlighting its variety of content, ranging from movies and drama to children’s programming and news.

“By repositioning itself as a platform for daily value, DStv aims to encourage content discovery across a wider array of genres, including movies, drama, kids’ programming, and news. This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” the statement added.

In addition to the decoder price cut, MultiChoice also introduced a limited-time promotional offer. Between June 16 and July 31, 2025, customers who pay for their current subscription plan in full will receive a complimentary upgrade to the next higher package tier.

The company said both the decoder discount and the free upgrade campaign are part of a broader response to Nigeria’s challenging economic climate, which has affected consumer purchasing power.

These incentives come after MultiChoice reportedly lost around 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025.

It will be recalled that the pay-TV provider had previously raised the prices of its DStv and GOtv subscription packages three times within a one-year span — first in April 2023, then in November 2023, and most recently in April 2024, with the latest hike taking effect from May 1.
