Retired police officers plan nationwide protest over pension scheme

Date:

Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have announced plans to stage a nationwide peaceful protest next month as part of their ongoing campaign to be removed from the scheme.

In a joint statement issued by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of the Retired Police Officers’ Union, Retired CSP Mannir M. Lawal Zaria and Retired ASP Danlami Maigamo, the group said the protest will hold on July 21, 2025, and will be tagged the “Mother of All Peaceful Protests.”

The union said the planned protest follows a critical meeting held in Kaduna, where members resolved to intensify their push for the Nigeria Police Force to be exempted from the CPS, citing unresolved grievances and lack of response from relevant authorities.

“As law-abiding citizens, we will continue to press our demands through peaceful means until our voices are heard,” the statement read.

The union recalled that a similar protest was held earlier this year from February 24 to March 3 at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, led by members from the Kaduna and Bauchi State Chapters.

During that protest, they submitted formal complaints to five strategic offices, including the Senate and House Committee Chairmen and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Despite those efforts, the group expressed frustration over the silence from the National Assembly, particularly on the outcome of a public hearing held on November 19, 2024, concerning the proposed establishment of a Police Pension Board.

The union reiterated its call for urgent action, warning that their patience is wearing thin, even as they remain committed to peaceful advocacy.
