Obi commends Ganduje’s resignation, calls for fit, competent leadership

Date:

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has lauded the decision of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to step down as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as both wise and honourable.

Breakingng.com had reported that Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State resigned from his position citing health concerns.

Meanwhile, Obi in a statement late Friday praised the APC chieftain for putting his well-being above political ambition, calling his decision an example for other public officials to follow.

“I have just read a news report that the National Chairman of the ruling party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health challenges as the reason,” Obi said.

He continued, “I must commend Dr. Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else. With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.”

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State emphasized that the country’s growing socioeconomic and security challenges demand leadership that is not only competent but also physically and mentally agile. He urged leaders whose health conditions limit their capacity to serve effectively to take a cue from Ganduje’s example.

“By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” Obi added.

Highlighting the consequences of absentee leadership, Obi noted: “At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments. These things are taking a serious toll on our development.”

He concluded his message with a note of goodwill to the former Kano State governor, saying, “May God Almighty grant Dr. Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.”

Dr. Ganduje’s resignation marks a significant development within the APC leadership structure, and reactions continue to pour in from across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
