PDP denies coalition directive, reaffirms focus on 2027 elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it has directed its members to join a new political coalition, stating that no such directive has been issued by the party’s leadership.

In a statement released on X Thursday by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party described the reports as “misrepresenting” and clarified that it has not taken any official position regarding any coalition movement.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the NWC states in clear terms that the PDP has not taken any official position on the issue of Coalition,” Ologunagba stated.

The clarification comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various opposition figures exploring the possibility of forming a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ologunagba emphasized that the PDP is currently focused on internal consolidation and strengthening its political machinery.

“The PDP is for now focused on building and consolidating on attained unity, stability and strengthening of its structures and capacity to play its roles as the leading opposition Party determined to return to power in 2027,” he said.

He further noted that preparations are underway for the party’s National Convention, which he said would be a crucial step in revitalizing the PDP ahead of the next general election.

“Our Party is currently working conscientiously towards a successful National Convention which will further revamp and reposition the PDP for the task ahead,” he added.

While denying involvement in any formal coalition at this time, the PDP left the door open to future alliances. Ologunagba said the party remains receptive to collaborating with other patriotic Nigerians who share its vision to rescue the country from what it described as the “rudderless and insensitive” administration of the APC.

“Nevertheless, as a major opposition Party with very strong presence and bond with Nigerians across the country, the PDP restates that it remains open to working with other well-meaning like-minded citizens in the collective effort to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of the rudderless and insensitive All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration,” he said.

Ologunagba concluded by expressing gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to reclaiming power.

“Our Party appreciates Nigerians for their interest, solidarity and loyalty to the PDP brand and reassures that all machineries are being put in place to re-activate the PDP winning ways ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
