Otunba Segun Showunmi, Promoter and Chief Convener of The Alternative, a pan-Nigerian movement, has sharply criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a coalition marked by “commotion, confusion, corruption, and mismanagement.”
Speaking at the Southwest Town Hall Meeting of The Alternative held in Abeokuta on Thursday, Showunmi dismissed the ADC’s newly formed coalition as lacking direction and credibility.
His comments come a day after several opposition figures adopted the ADC as the platform for a political alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.
As part of the move, former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were named interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
Reacting to the development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said Nigeria’s political culture is in urgent need of transformation. “Nigerians must rethink how they engage with politics, especially when it comes to voting and leadership choices,” he added.
His words, “It’s the right of politicians to do whatever they want to do but it’s the duty of citizens to look at them and say, you have done this kind of trick one time too many.
“That party, the ADC, has been in existence for sometimes. Some of our people have been there and they even have contested issues around their Chairmanship.
“Yet, today, you have left your own party and you have rushed in there. If you go there quietly like decent people so that you don’t carry the same character you had in your party to destroy your party into a new forum, people would have respected you.

“But what are you doing? You’re huffing and puffing as if the party does not have members before. Who will follow such people?
“So, when people ask me what I have to say about the coalition or whatever they call it? I will just say, the merry-go-round of the musical chair they have been doing since 1992 did not work for them and will not work now,” he said.
According to the PDP chieftain, Nigerians have till next year to decide whether or not to re-elect President Bola Tinubu, maintaining that the coalition’s leaders, would be a waste of time if Nigerians entrust them with power.
“In the meantime, we may not know who can fit in, but we know these ones can not do anything. It will be a waste of everybody’s time even if they try it”.
He emphasised that The Alternative was established to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by addressing critical issues such as voter apathy, vote-buying, and the growing divisions among citizens.
Also speaking at the event, Labour Party (LP) Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, stressed the need for a truly progressive coalition, urging Nigerians to reject the rebranding of “political despots” as national saviours.
