Adeleke shuts down defection rumours, reaffirms loyalty to PDP

Date:

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has denied claims suggesting he is planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amid the rising profile of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a new hub for opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor refuted the speculation as entirely unfounded and deceptive.

Adeleke reassured members of the PDP, both within Osun and beyond, that his loyalty to the party remains intact and unwavering, emphasizing his current role as the PDP’s leader in the state.

“I assure the good people of Osun that I remain part and parcel of the PDP family. I am not defecting to any party,” Adeleke declared.Urging the public to disregard what he termed “fake news”, the governor emphasized that his administration remains focused on its core agenda of development, not political distractions.

“I am committed to our people and our mandate. What concerns me now is fulfilling the promises we made, not party speculation,” he said.

Adeleke’s remarks come amid increasing reports surrounding the ADC, which was recently repositioned as the political platform for a coalition of opposition leaders aiming to challenge the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The alliance reportedly includes key figures from both the APC and PDP, with negotiations said to be ongoing between the coalition and some state governors across party divides.

Sources within the coalition revealed that at least five PDP governors have pledged their support but are delaying formal announcements pending internal resolutions within the PDP, especially issues tied to the influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

A former Katsina senator involved in the planning of the coalition commented: “Five PDP governors have given us their commitment; they are going to join us, but they want to see the end of Wike’s drama in the PDP,” he said. “What people don’t know is that some of the governors, including those in the APC, are supporting us.”

He further disclosed that talks with some APC governors began over a year ago and remain ongoing.

Another source, said to be close to a former minister backing the movement, shared that outreach efforts now span both northern and southern regions of the country.

“You want us to put everything we’re doing on the pages of a newspaper? No! But I can tell you that we are talking to seven governors,” he said.

Despite the mounting political chatter, Governor Adeleke’s message to supporters remains clear—his focus is on governance, not political realignments.
