Super Falcons forward Omorinsola Babajide has shared the emotional story behind her goal celebration during Nigeria’s 3-0 triumph over Tunisia at the Labri Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday night.
The heartfelt tribute was in honour of Diogo Jota, a former Liverpool player who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain alongside his younger brother André Silva last Thursday.

Babajide found the net for the first time in her international career, scoring Nigeria’s second goal in a convincing win over the North Africans.
Reflecting on her celebration, Babajide said: “It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club especially. We call it the signature celebration really,” she explained.
“I just wanted to do something for him. He was like one of my best players at the club when I was there as well. May his soul rest in perfect peace, both of them.”
Babajide had a long stint at Liverpool Ladies before making the switch to Brighton, making the connection all the more personal.
Super Falcons next match will be against Botswana on Thursday in the on going CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
