The Federal Government has formally set 16 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into all tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
This decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Tuesday during the opening session of the ongoing Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that any admission granted outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) framework will be considered illegal.
He cautioned that individuals or institutions involved in such practices will face legal consequences.
He further issued a stern warning to heads of tertiary institutions, stating that those implicated in admission-related malpractice would be held accountable and prosecuted.
According to the minister, the official age of 16 set by the government is not negotiable.
The Minister’s remarks underline the government’s resolve to enforce transparency and integrity within Nigeria’s admission process, using CAPS as the only recognized platform for student enrollment.
