Tottenham seal £60m deal for Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur have landed a significant signing ahead of the new campaign by activating the £60 million release clause of Morgan Gibbs-White, securing his transfer from Nottingham Forest.

The move was confirmed by well-known football insider Fabrizio Romano, who said: “Morgan Gibbs-White to Tottenham, here we go! Spurs trigger £60m release clause after direct contact with Forest today. Medical booked and set to take place in 24 hours.”

The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined Forest from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2022, has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s standout creative talents and has earned recognition at the international level with England.

Having originally signed with Forest on a deal that could reach £42.5 million with bonuses, Gibbs-White’s stock has risen considerably after a standout 2024–25 season, contributing seven goals and 10 assists, as Forest clinched a seventh-place finish and a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

David Ornstein of The Athletic noted that Gibbs-White had been on the radar of several top clubs, but Spurs acted swiftly to bolster their squad under new manager Thomas Frank. The switch also presents the midfielder with a chance to compete in the Champions League, a notable career milestone.

While Manchester City had shown interest earlier in the window, they shifted focus to alternative targets including Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders, leaving Spurs free to swoop in.

During his time at Forest, Gibbs-White made 118 appearances, scored 18 goals, and registered 28 assists. He also wore the captain’s armband on several occasions.

This acquisition forms part of a busy transfer window for Tottenham, who have also added Mohammed Kudus from West Ham for £55 million and defender Kota Takai.

Additionally, permanent deals for Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso were finalised after successful loan spells last season. Spurs’ qualification for the Champions League came via victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

For Nottingham Forest, the departure of Gibbs-White is a bitter blow. The fan base is still reeling from the recent £52 million sale of Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United.

“There is no denying the fact that, if you are a Nottingham Forest supporter, this is exceedingly worrying news. The prospect of losing Gibbs-White will be hard to take given his emergence as a high-calibre Premier League player,” observed senior football journalist Danny Taylor.
