Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Nigeria for São Tomé, capital of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, ahead of the country’s 50th Independence Day commemoration.
Shettima, accompanied by his wife, Hajiya Nana Shettima, arrived in São Tomé on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

He is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the milestone Golden Jubilee celebration of the island nation’s sovereignty.
The Vice President’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, made the development public through a video posted on his X handle.
Nkwocha stated, “The Vice President departed Abuja on Saturday, July 12, to join other African leaders and dignitaries at the grand finale of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of the Central African Island nation’s independence.”
He further emphasized the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe, particularly in the shared administration of resources within the Gulf of Guinea.
Nkwocha pointed to the Nigeria-São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority (NSTPJDA) as the institutional framework guiding this cooperation, which oversees operations in the Joint Development Zone (JDZ).
Beyond energy and resource collaboration, he added that Nigeria has extended multiple support efforts to São Tomé and Príncipe, including technical assistance, humanitarian relief, and aid during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria upon completing his official duties in São Tomé.
