INEC extends voter registration in Anambra by three days

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a three-day extension to the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State.

The registration, initially slated to end on July 17, will now continue until July 20.

This was made known by Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chair of its Information and Voter Education Committee, in a press release issued Thursday in Awka.

“This decision was made during the commission’s weekly meeting held earlier today at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja,” he stated.

According to Olumekun, the extension was granted in response to multiple appeals from the public and various stakeholders who urged the commission to allow more time for registration.

He noted that INEC was impressed by both the turnout and the peaceful conduct of the exercise at all 326 registration centres across Anambra.

As of Wednesday, he said, “96,085 new potential voters had successfully registered within nine days,” averaging over 10,600 daily registrations.

Olumekun also disclosed that INEC received 12,595 requests for voter transfer and 7,061 applications for card replacements or updates due to damage or loss.

Providing further demographic insight, he noted that women and youths led in participation. “Out of the 96,085 new registrants, 56,017 representing 58 per cent are female, while 50,429 representing 52.48 per cent are young people between the ages of 18 and 34,” he said.

Following the conclusion of registration, INEC plans to display the preliminary voters’ register for public scrutiny and objections, as required by the Electoral Act.

The data will then undergo verification through its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

He also mentioned that a final demographic breakdown of registrants would be published after the data cleanup.

Olumekun further revealed that the commission had received five new letters from groups seeking to become registered political parties, raising the total number of pending applications to 134.

“Details of these applications, including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, have been made available on the commission’s website and social media platforms for public scrutiny,” he said.

He assured the public of INEC’s continued transparency and readiness to keep the electorate informed as the Anambra governorship election, scheduled for November 8, draws closer.
