57 lawyers shortlisted for SAN rank

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has announced the shortlist of 57 legal professionals for elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The announcement, made on Thursday by Kabir Akanbi, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, followed the LPPC’s 169th plenary session held earlier in the week.

According to the statement, “The rank of senior advocate of Nigeria is conferred as a mark of professional excellence upon legal practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship.”

In preparation for the formal conferment, all shortlisted individuals are expected to undergo a mandatory pre-swearing-in induction programme. The LPPC emphasized that successful completion of this programme is a prerequisite for attaining the rank.

Additionally, the committee cautioned against premature publicity, referencing regulatory guidelines which prohibit candidates from publishing congratulatory adverts or related messages.

“Any breach of these provisions may attract sanctions for violations of statutory or ethical rules as expressly stated,” the statement warned.

The conferment ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 29, 2025.
