The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that 10 new applications have been submitted by groups seeking to become registered political parties, bringing the total number of active requests to 144.
This update was contained in a press release on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Previously, INEC disclosed on June 25 that it had received 110 letters of intent.
Since then, the commission has recorded 34 additional applications, underscoring growing political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“In our last press release, we assured Nigerians that we are finalising the necessary tests on the party registration portal designed and built in-house by our ICT officials,” the statement read.
“As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the Commission and approved for deployment.”
Olumekun added that INEC is in the process of reviewing all submissions to determine which groups qualify to proceed to the next stage of the registration process as comprehensive report will be presented at the Commission’s next regular meeting.
The electoral body has also published details of the latest applicants—including their names, logos, interim leaderships, and addresses—on its official platforms to ensure transparency.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the public updated on its activities.
