Arsenal just felt like the right club for me – Gyökeres

Date:

In one of the most anticipated summer transfer deals, Arsenal Football Club has officially secured the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP on a five-year deal worth €63.5 million, with an additional €10 million in potential add-ons.

The 26-year-old forward, who lit up the Portuguese league last season with a phenomenal goal tally, expressed his excitement about joining the North London giants, describing the move as a perfect match both personally and professionally.

Speaking after signing the contract, Gyökeres revealed that his decision was influenced by conversations with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta as well as the impression he got when facing the Gunners on the pitch.

“I just felt that it was the right club for me,” Gyökeres said. “What I heard from Mikel and Andrea when I was speaking with them, and just what I’ve seen in the past years—how they’ve been playing football.”

The striker, who scored against Arsenal in a thrilling Europa League tie last season, admitted that his firsthand experience of the team’s intensity and tactical quality played a role in convincing him to make the switch to the Emirates.

“When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I could really feel it was a very strong team and very difficult to play against,” he added.

Gyökeres also highlighted the club’s rich history and passionate global following as key factors in his decision.

“That made me choose Arsenal, and of course all the history the club has and the massive fanbase,” he said. “It’s been amazing to see all the support that they have already given me before I even arrived. That’s what it’s all about. It’s going to be very nice to see them in the stadiums as well.”

The Swedish international arrives at a crucial time for the Gunners, who are looking to build on back-to-back Premier League title challenges and go a step further in both domestic and European competitions.

Known for his powerful runs, clinical finishing, and relentless work rate, Gyökeres is expected to bolster Arsenal’s frontline and provide a new dimension to their attacking play.

The deal marks another statement of intent from Mikel Arteta and the club’s hierarchy, who have continued to invest heavily in top-tier talent to re-establish Arsenal among Europe’s elite.

With pre-season preparations underway, Arsenal fans will be eager to see their new No. 9 in action as he integrates into Arteta’s dynamic squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
