Shutdown of Badeggi radio station an assault on press freedom – NGE

Date:

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has strongly denounced the recent shutdown of Badeggi Radio by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, describing the action as an unconstitutional assault on press freedom and democratic principles.

In a statement issued by NGE President Eze Anaba and the General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the professional body characterized the governor’s directive as an overreach of executive power that threatens Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) strongly condemn the recent order for the closure of Badeggi Radio by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State. We consider this a blatant attack on press freedom and democracy in Nigeria,” Anaba declared.

The NGE argued that the governor exceeded his constitutional authority in ordering the radio station’s closure, emphasizing that only the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) possesses the legal mandate to sanction broadcast outlets following proper investigations of alleged violations.

“Governor Bago acted outside his powers to order the closure of a radio station. The power to sanction television and radio stations only lies with the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) after a thorough investigation of any alleged breach of the Code,” the statement noted.

The editors’ association expressed concern that the arbitrary closure represents a dangerous regression to authoritarian practices reminiscent of Nigeria’s military era, which concluded over two decades ago.

“Government officials should know that we are in a democracy and therefore, the act of arbitrary order for the sealing off and closure of a radio station is unacceptable. Arbitrary closure of media houses reminds us of the dark days of military rule, which ended 26 years ago,” the Guild emphasized.

The NGE welcomed comments from Minister of Information and National Orientation Mallam Mohammed Idris, who reportedly highlighted the procedural irregularities in the governor’s action. However, the organization called for more decisive federal intervention.

“We are happy that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, has pointed this out. This should go beyond observing the anomaly. The federal government should order the unsealing of the premises of the radio station, while investigation is carried out,” the statement urged.

While acknowledging that allegations of incitement require serious consideration, the NGE insisted that due process must be followed before any punitive measures are implemented.

“Governor Bago’s allegation of incitement of violence by the radio station is a serious issue, which has to be investigated and proven before any action can be taken,” the Guild stated, adding that media professionals should maintain strict adherence to journalistic ethics.

The organization grounded its opposition in constitutional and international legal frameworks, citing fundamental rights protections.

“Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees freedom of expression and press freedom. Also, Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which Nigeria is signatory to, also guarantees press freedom and freedom of expression,” the NGE noted.

The professional body called for immediate restoration of the radio station’s operations while any investigations proceed, warning that the closure undermines essential democratic functions.

“The closure of Badeggi Radio, a vital platform for public discourse and information dissemination, is a worrying trend that threatens the very fabric of our democracy,” the NGE observed.

The NGE concluded by reaffirming the critical role of independent media in democratic governance and demanding respect for constitutional rights from all levels of government.

“The Guild reiterates that a free and independent press is essential for a functioning democracy and demands that governments at all levels respect and uphold this fundamental right,” the statement concluded.
