Badeggi FM closure not political, says Bago

Date:

Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has firmly denied that the recent shutdown of Badeggi FM was linked to fears over the 2027 general elections.

In a press briefing in Minna, his Special Adviser on Communication, Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, dismissed the allegations, branding them as politically charged and baseless.

“The decision to shut down Badeggi FM had nothing to do with the 2027 elections,” Vatsa said. “Governor Bago is not threatened by any future contest. His record of achievements is strong enough to speak for him.”

The state government ordered the station’s closure last week, accusing it of broadcasting inflammatory content.

However, the move stirred criticism, especially following its broadcast of an interview featuring former FIRS Chairman Mallam Mohammed Mamman Nani, rumored to be a prospective 2027 challenger.

Vatsa defended the action, asserting that it was a lawful step aimed at curbing the spread of disinformation and incitement.

“The governor has never been afraid of political competition,” Vatsa added. “Since 2007, he has never lost an election. He served three terms in the House of Representatives and now governs with the backing of the people and the party.

“He also highlighted recent endorsements from APC stakeholders in Niger State for both Governor Bago and President Bola Tinubu, citing them as a testament to the administration’s performance and popular support.

Breakingng.com had earlier reported that the closure of the broadcasting outfit elicited reactions from the federal government faulting the action of the state government stating that the revocation of any media outfit is within the purview of the federal government.

Also, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) including the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) condemned the action and called on the state government to reverse it.
