No sacred cows in corruption fight – EFCC replies ADC

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has firmly rejected accusations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it is targeting opposition leaders for politically motivated investigations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the Commission reiterated its impartiality, insisting that all corruption cases are handled strictly on the basis of evidence.

“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest, or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption,” Oyewale said.

The EFCC described the ADC’s allegations as “self-serving, diversionary, narrow, and idle,” emphasising that corruption cases are pursued regardless of political affiliation, timing, or circumstance.

Oyewale further noted, “Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated, and there is no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations.”

He stressed that the Commission’s work extends to members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including sitting governors and ministers.

“Available records in our courts show that several political figures from all divides are answering charges of alleged economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption,” the statement read.

Dismissing any claims of bias, the EFCC reminded Nigerians that it is funded by taxpayers and operates independently of the ruling party.

“The EFCC does not belong to the APC. It belongs to the Nigerian people,” Oyewale declared.

He also said the agency would not succumb to pressure to reveal details of its investigations prematurely. “The Commission will not be blackmailed into making full disclosures of its discreet investigations of any state or non-state actor, no matter the provocation.

“All well-meaning Nigerians are enjoined to ignore political statements meant to heat up the polity and divert attention from the pillage of the national treasury,” he concluded.
