Oby Ezekwesili says Nigeria’s political class normalizing impunity, undermining rule of law

Date:

Former Education Minister, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has decried what she sees as glaring inequality and systemic rot in Nigeria, citing two recent aviation-related incidents.

In a statement on X, she contrasted the treatment of a politically connected man who obstructed an aircraft with that of a young woman forcefully removed from a flight.

She said the former faced only “a soft slap-on-the-wrist” flight ban, despite being filmed, while the latter was “stripped naked, dragged off the plane, arrested, charged, remanded, and sent to Kirikiri prison” within days.

“This brazen double standard in law enforcement is not just unjust — it is a direct assault on the rule of law. It is yet another example of the contemptuous normalization of impunity by Nigeria’s political class,” Ezekwesili declared.S+

She said the woman’s ordeal reflects the daily humiliation millions of Nigerians endure, often to the extent of defending those responsible for their suffering.

Ezekwesili called for the woman’s “immediate release” and urged regulators to enforce rules equally for the powerful and the powerless.

“No preferential treatment. No double standards. The answer lies in our hands, dear 99% of Nigerians. A day shall come when Nigerians collectively rise in one accord to confront the 1%,” she said.
