PSG beat Spurs on penalties to claim 2025 UEFA Super Cup

Date:

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the reigning European champions, staged a dramatic late fightback to snatch the UEFA Super Cup title on penalties, denying Thomas Frank a dream start and his first piece of silverware as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Tottenham appeared destined for victory, leading 2-0 with just six minutes of normal time remaining.

However, PSG substitute Gonçalo Ramos struck deep into stoppage time, heading home in the 94th minute to force the game straight into a shootout.

The shootout began poorly for PSG when Vitinha dragged his opening kick wide, but Spurs failed to capitalise. Micky van de Ven, who had opened the scoring earlier, saw his attempt kept out by PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

Mathys Tel then missed for Frank’s men, paving the way for Nuno Mendes to calmly slot home the decisive penalty for the French side.

The result denied Tottenham the chance to claim a second European trophy in just three months. Frank was overseeing his first competitive match since taking over from Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed just 16 days after guiding Spurs to a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May.

In Udine, Italy, Van de Ven broke the deadlock shortly before half-time, reacting quickest to tuck away the rebound after Chevalier had pushed João Palhinha’s effort against the crossbar.

The PSG goalkeeper—set to be the club’s first-choice this season following Gianluigi Donnarumma’s omission from the squad—was beaten again early in the second half when Cristian Romero’s header from a Pedro Porro free-kick slipped past his grasp despite his best efforts.

PSG, still shaking off the rust after only returning to training a week earlier following their Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea in July, refused to fold.

Lee Kang-in sparked the comeback with a superb 20-yard strike before Ramos’ late header forced penalties, where the French champions completed their remarkable turnaround.
