JUST IN: NHRC panel clears military of forced abortions, indicts soldiers for 2016 killings in Borno

Date:

An independent investigation committee established by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has exonerated the military from allegations of conducting forced abortions on thousands of women in Nigeria’s northeast.

However, the panel did find evidence implicating certain soldiers in the killing of a woman and three children by setting them on fire in Borno State in 2016.

The incident reportedly took place in Marte Local Government Area.

The committee, led by former Supreme Court Justice Abdu Aboki, conducted its investigation following reports that the military had allegedly coerced women into undergoing at least 10,000 abortions between 2013 and 2021.
