A tragic incident occurred in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State, as a female student fell into a septic tank while fetching water from a storex tank.
BREAKINGNG gathered that the incident occurred on Friday night in the Mozambique Hall of residence occupied by female 100-level students.
Another female student was said to have also fainted from the shock of the incident.
A student, Miracle Ayobami, told our reporter that the two students were rushed to the campus clinic following the incident.
Miracle said, “We learnt she was trying to fetch water from the tank. The soak away must be very weak just like many other parts of the hostel. The buildings are old. The other student collapsed from the shock.”
Another X user who tweeted about the incident said the students were rescued on time.
The user @Jiggyjosh_, wrote, “Two ladies fell into soakaway in Moz this evening. They were rescued on time. Let’s just pray for their rapid recovery. OAU needs to do better mehn.”
The clerk of the Students Union who tweets via @Ewaoluwa_e_a also said, “Only one lady fell into the soakaway. The other fainted due to the shock caused by ruckus.”
The university authorities have not issued a statement regarding the incident.
But officials of the Students’ Union confirmed the incident to our reporter on Saturday.
The Students’ Union Public Relations Officer, Aka Daniel, who preferred not to state the students’ identities told our reporter in an interview that the students were rushed to the university health centre before they were moved to the OAU Teaching Hospital.
“One lady fell and she was rescued immediately. They were rescued and rushed to the health centre before they were rushed to the OAUTHC. One of them has been discharged. They are recovering.
“The other person suffered cardiac arrest due to the shock when she heard somebody fell (into the septic tank),” Daniel told our reporter.
The incident brings back the memory of a female student on the campus who also fell into a soak away in a hostel off campus in 2022.
The 200-level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Miss Ajibola Ayomikun, died after she fell into the soakaway in the hostel known as BVER, one of the private hostels in the “students’ village.”
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident.
