US President-Elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, to lead a newly planned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk, who is also the owner of X (formerly Twitter), was a prominent supporter of Trump during the presidential campaign and is expected to play a key role in the incoming administration’s efforts to reform government operations.
Trump’s victory in the November 5 election secured him more than 270 electoral votes, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a statement, the president-elect outlined his administration’s commitment to overhauling government bureaucracy, saying the creation of DOGE would help eliminate wasteful spending, reduce excessive regulations, and streamline federal agencies to support the broader “Save America” initiative.
“I am confident that with Elon Musk and Vivek [Ramaswamy] at the helm, we will make significant strides in reforming the federal bureaucracy, driving efficiency, and improving the lives of everyday Americans,” Trump said.
“Our goal is clear: to root out the massive waste and fraud that plague our $6.5 trillion federal budget.”
Trump, who will begin his second and final term on January 25, 2025, emphasised that the restructuring would prioritize cost-cutting and fiscal responsibility, aiming to restore trust in government operations.
