The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.
The announcement was made by the Returning Officer, Prof. Olayemi Akinwunmi, at the state collation center located at INEC’s headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure.
Prof. Akinwunmi, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja, Kogi State, announced the results and declared Aiyedatiwa elected at exactly 2:29 p.m on Sunday.
According to the official results, Aiyedatiwa secured 366,781 votes, defeating his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes. Adeyemi Nejo of the African Democratic Party (ADP) came third with 4,138 votes.
Prof. Akinwunmi said that “Aiyedatiwa Lucky Orimisan of the APC, having satisfied all the requirements of law and scored majority of the lawful votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
The election was marked by a low voter turnout and incidents of vote-buying but was largely peaceful across the state.
Aiyedatiwa, who had served as the deputy governor to the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu until December 2023, now begins a four-year term as Ondo State governor.
Aiyedatiwa achieved a landslide victory, winning in all 18 local government areas of the state.
