FG reinstates Ikechebelu as acting VC of UNIZIK

Date:

The federal government has reinstated Joseph Ikechebelu as the acting vice-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State.

This decision, announced by Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the permanent secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education, came via an official letter issued on Thursday.

The letter, referencing a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, outlined the recent changes at the university.

It stated that President Tinubu, through a communication dated November 18, 2024, had annulled the appointment of Professor Benard Ifeanyi Odoh as the university’s 7th substantive vice-chancellor.

Odoh had been appointed by the dissolved 10th Governing Council of UNIZIK, a decision deemed illegal. Following this, the federal government approved Ikechebelu’s reinstatement as acting vice-chancellor, effective immediately.

The letter also tasked Ikechebelu with assuming full responsibility for the university’s administration.

Additionally, he was instructed to refer any matters that require council approval to the Minister of Education until a new governing council is put in place.

Alongside Ikechebelu’s return, the federal government also reinstated Victor Modebelu as the acting registrar of UNIZIK.

Modebelu had previously held the position before being replaced by Rosemary Nwokike, whose appointment was revoked on Wednesday.
