Six key facts about Port Harcourt Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced on Tuesday that the Port Harcourt Refinery had officially commenced operations.

This milestone was confirmed by Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer.

Here are six key facts about the refinery:

1. Location and History

  • Situated in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, the refinery is located in Alesa Eleme, Rivers State, approximately 25 kilometers east of Port Harcourt.
  • The Port Harcourt Refinery has been operational since 1965.

2. Renovation and Modernisation

  • In March 2021, the Nigerian government approved a $1.5 billion budget for the refurbishment and modernization of the refinery complex.

3. Power and Steam Capacity

  • The refinery complex features four turbogenerators, each capable of generating 14 MW of electricity per hour. It also includes four boilers, each producing 120 tons of steam per hour.

4. Technical Partners and Repairs

  • The Italian firm Maire Tecnimont was hired to oversee the project’s scope, while Eni served as the technical consultant. The refinery underwent its first phase of repairs after closing in March 2019.

5. Product Distribution

  • As of Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the refinery began trucking out petroleum products.

6. Ownership and Management

  • The Port Harcourt Refinery is one of three refineries owned by the Federal Government and managed by the NNPCL.
