A Chief Magistrates Court in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State has ordered the remand of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi at the state correctional centre over allegations of defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola.
The charges relate to claims made in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, in which he alleged that Babalola had compromised the Supreme Court. Prosecutor Samson Osubu presented a 16-count charge during Wednesday’s proceedings, to which Farotimi pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun directed the defence to file a formal bail application and adjourned the case to Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
In the interim, Adeosun ruled, “The defendant is hereby ordered remanded at the Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti.”
Farotimi was arrested in Lagos on Monday by officers of the Ekiti State Police Command and transported to Ado Ekiti for arraignment.
