The police in Ogun State have detained one Joseph Prince, 22, after his visiting girlfriend, Agala Peace, also 22, died in a mysterious circumstance in the Ota area of the state.
BREAKINGNG gathered that Prince, who lives at 37, Temidire Street in the Atan Ota area was conveying his sick girlfriend to the hospital on Tuesday when she gave up the ghost.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity told our reporter that Peace had visited Prince in November.
“During the period of her stay, she fell sick and her boyfriend took her to the hospital, she was treated at Medi Care Hospital in Ota and later referred to LUTH. She died at the third hospital,” the source said.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident.
Odutola said the boyfriend reported the death at the Onipanu Division of the command and was later arrested.
The PPRO said, “The boyfriend narrated that he contacted the family before taking the girlfriend to the hospital. They were later referred to LUTH in Ikeja, Lagos, but according to him, while on their way, Peace’s health got worsened and they took her to the state hospital in Ota where she was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.”
She added that “Detectives visited the scene and the corpse was examined. The boyfriend, Joseph Prince, was arrested and investigation is still ongoing.”
The development came amid a recent revelation by the Nigerian Police Force linking many cases of missing young women to ritual practices, with a growing connection to the rising hookup culture in the country.
Odutola revealed this on Wednesday when she was featured on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.
During the discussion on “Hookup Culture: Impact on Youth Values and Relationships,” Odutola revealed that young women aged 20 to 32 were the most affected.
She added that many young people, especially males, believe that ritual killings are a way to become wealthy.
“That is why we are having advocacy and sensitisation, to enlighten young persons to make them understand that engaging in ritual killings does not in any way make them rich,” she said.
