Chinasa Unaegbunam, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Hague Court of Arbitration for Aviation (HCAA). This prestigious appointment underscores her expertise in aviation law and highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in international aviation arbitration.

In a statement on Friday, Tunde Moshood, spokesperson for Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, described Unaegbunam’s appointment as a remarkable achievement both personally and for the nation.

“This accomplishment underscores Unaegbunam’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading aviation legal experts and marks her as the nation’s second Learned Silk in Aviation,” the statement said.

The HCAA, in its announcement, unveiled a diverse 40-member Advisory Board comprising prominent figures in aviation law, mediation, and arbitration. Unaegbunam joins a distinguished group of professionals, including Claire McDermott, Mary Walker, and Wade Thomson, who will contribute to shaping arbitration and mediation practices in the global aviation sector.

“The HCAA’s advisory board, supported by its technical, mediation, and rules standing committees, provides specialized knowledge and skills to the court’s board of directors. This collective effort is vital in advancing dispute resolution mechanisms tailored to the complexities of the aviation industry,” the statement added.

As part of her role, Unaegbunam will offer strategic insights to the HCAA as it promotes arbitration and mediation as preferred methods for resolving contractual disputes in the aviation sector.

Unaegbunam’s appointment is a significant milestone, marking her as Nigeria’s second aviation SAN to achieve this global recognition. Her contributions continue to inspire the next generation of legal and aviation professionals.

“Her appointment aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in aviation, a sector pivotal to the nation’s economic development,” Moshood stated.

The recognition of Unaegbunam’s expertise highlights the increasing prominence of Nigerian professionals in shaping international legal and aviation standards, reinforcing the country’s commitment to leadership and innovation in the industry.
