The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of 19 senior police officers over various acts of misconduct. The affected officers include 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent of Police.
In addition, 19 other officers faced demotion, including one Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and 13 Assistant Superintendents.
The PSC also reprimanded two Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). One was sanctioned for refusing to carry out lawful instructions, while the other received a letter of warning for negligence.
In a statement issued on Friday, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani disclosed that the disciplinary actions were part of the commission’s deliberations during the final segment of its first plenary meeting in Abuja.
Ani noted that most of the dismissed officers are to be prosecuted by the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Unit. He added, “Three pending disciplinary matters were stepped down, with a request for further information from the Inspector General of Police.”
The plenary also reviewed and acted on 110 pending disciplinary cases, 23 appeals and petitions, and nine legal matters, including court judgments requiring compliance.
DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.), the Chairman of the PSC, emphasized the commission’s commitment to handling police disciplinary cases promptly. He stated, “The Commission will henceforth consider police disciplinary matters with dispatch, allowing officers who are not culpable to progress in their careers while ensuring those found guilty face appropriate penalties.”
The PSC’s latest actions reinforce its commitment to accountability and ethical standards within the Nigeria Police Force.
