A Lagos-based driver, Henry Iwhiwhu, died in a fatal multiple crash that occurred on Saturday at Onigbongbo, along Atan/Agbara Road, Atan-Ota, Ogun State.
BREAKINGNG gathered that the passenger in the driver’s vehicle also sustained severe injuries in the crash that involved four vehicles: A Volvo Tipper (Reg. No. AAB855YL), Suzuki Minibus (Reg. No. KTU375XX), Mercedes Mini Truck (Reg. No. LAR812XA) and Nissan Sunny Cabstar.
The police in the area confirmed that the Suzuki minibus was driven by Henry, aged 35 years, of Ogunfowokan Street, Okota, Isolo, Lagos State and the passenger’s details were given as Lewis Eqayo, aged 40 years.
A Mercedes mini truck with registration number LAR812XA, driven by Vincent Nwigwe, male, aged 69 years, of Onigbongbo Area, Atan-Ota, was also part of the collision.
The fourth vehicle involved was a Nissan Sunny Cabstar carrying used plastic and driven by one Azeez Olagunju, male, aged 57 years, of Oke Oko Bereko, Badagry.
A resident in the area, who gave his name simply as Habeeb, while narrating the incident, said the Volvo tipper coming from Agbara drifted from its lane and collided with the Suzuki bus, causing a change of collision on the road after other drivers lost control.
He explained that all the vehicles involved were damaged.
Habeeb said, “The accident occurred when the Volvo tipper, traveling from Agbara towards Atan-Ota, veered off its lane upon reaching Onigbongbo and collided with the Suzuki minibus, which was heading in the opposite direction. At the same time, the Mercedes mini truck, also traveling towards Atan-Ota, collided with the Nissan Sunny Cabstar moving ahead of it.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the Atan Ota Division of the command got the report of the accident from the traffic police officers on ground.
The PPRO said the bus driver died at the hospital where he was rushed to and the injured passenger was responding to treatment.
Odutola said, “As a result of the collision, the driver of the Suzuki minibus, Henry Iwhiwhu, and his passenger, Lewis Eqayo, sustained severe injuries. They were rushed to Oluwalogbon Hospital for medical treatment. Sadly, the minibus driver, Henry, later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.”
She added, “All four vehicles sustained significant damage. The scene was visited by the Motor Traffic Police, and necessary actions were taken. Further investigations are ongoing to establish more details.”
