Peter Obi meets Afe Babalola amid Dele Farotimi’s trial

Date:

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), visited Afe Babalola, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday.

The meeting took place at Babalola’s office on the campus of Afe Babalola University.

During his visit, Obi also stopped by the prison facility where human rights activist Dele Farotimi is currently being detained.

Farotimi, accused of spreading false information against Babalola in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, has been in custody since last Tuesday.

On the same day as Obi’s visit, Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti granted Farotimi bail in the sum of N50 million with one surety.

The case against Farotimi stems from a petition by Babalola, dated November 19, 2024, and addressed to the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police. Babalola alleged that the book contained defamatory statements accusing him of influencing the Supreme Court in a land dispute judgment that spanned over two decades.

The book accused Babalola of “corrupting the Supreme Court from ages past,” leading to unjust rulings.

Farotimi was arrested by officers of the Lagos State Police Command and subsequently transported to Ekiti State for arraignment.
