Shekarau: Political parties should abandon zoning for 2027 elections

Date:

Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano, has called on political parties to field credible candidates for the 2027 presidential election.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Shekarau urged political leaders and parties to focus on promoting inclusive governance, advising against the use of “divisive strategies” such as zoning.

“I always prefer to use balancing rather than zoning or rotation. There has to be some balancing. Until today, in America up to 242 years of democracy, they still have concerns about balancing,” he said.

“So, all we need to do in Nigeria is to do some balancing to carry everyone along. There should be no concern about where you are coming from. My concern is who are you?

“What we are advocating in the league is credible leadership. All the parties should come up with their planning in a situation whereby they make the best choices.

“But for Nigerians now to decide, our concern is ‘let’s look at the candidates produced by the parties’.

“Our challenge is that all the parties should give Nigerians correct candidates so we have the best to choose from. But if you give us all evils, we will choose the best from the evils.”

In October, Shekarau, chairman of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), criticized the Bola Tinubu administration, stating that its performance has been below expectations.
