A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Tuesday ordered the detention of Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, CEO of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, at the Agodi Correctional Centre.
This decision followed their arraignment in connection with the tragic stampede that occurred last week during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which resulted in the deaths of 35 children and injuries to six others.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi issued the remand order after the accused were brought to court under tight security.
The three individuals face four charges related to the incident, which, according to the prosecution, violate Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The prosecution contends that the defendants’ actions contributed to the tragic stampede that marred the Christmas celebration.
Following the proceedings, Magistrate Ogunkanmi directed that the accused be held in custody at the Agodi Correctional Centre while awaiting legal advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The court session, which attracted considerable public attention, saw the suspects escorted by heavily armed law enforcement officers.
