Osun man sentenced to death for chicken theft finally regains freedom

Date:

Segun Olowookere, a resident of Osun State who was sentenced to death in 2010 for stealing a chicken and eggs, has regained his freedom after 14 years in prison.

Governor Ademola Adeleke granted clemency to Olowookere and 52 other convicts on December 26 as part of his administration’s commitment to justice and rehabilitation.

Olowookere’s case gained national attention after a viral interview with actress Biola Adebayo, in which his parents alleged he was wrongfully arrested by police officers. His father, Olanrewaju, claimed a divisional police officer demanded money for his release, and their inability to pay led to his imprisonment.

In a video shared on Monday, Adebayo stood outside Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison alongside Olowookere, expressing gratitude to Governor Adeleke for granting him a second chance at life.

“This is Segun Olowookere. We’re just leaving Kirikiri. He is finally out of the correctional centre. Thank you so much for the love and support that we got,” she said, adding that prison officials commended his exemplary behaviour during his incarceration.
