Renowned founder of Power City International, Pastor Abel Damina, has stirred controversy during his 2025 New Year’s Eve service by explaining why drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes should not be considered sins.
Addressing his congregation, Pastor Damina asserted, “You cannot be a sinner by eating and drinking. I’ve told you before, alcohol is not a sin.”
He emphasised that his role as a preacher is to focus on teaching salvation through faith in Christ, rather than laying out moral guidelines.
“You didn’t come here for me to teach you morality; you came for me to teach you salvation by faith through Christ,” Damina stated firmly, reinforcing his stance on the matter.

While standing by his belief, Pastor Damina also acknowledged the practical consequences of certain behaviors. “You should know that if you smoke, it can harm your body. If you drink alcohol, you might end up in a gutter. These are things you should have learned from home,” he cautioned his congregation.
Known for his bold and unconventional teachings, Pastor Damina’s remarks have sparked a range of reactions. Critics argue that such views could lead to a disregard for personal responsibility and moral conduct, while supporters praise him for prioritizing spiritual growth over moral judgment.
