NFF appoints Eric Sékou Chelle as new head coach for Super Eagles

Date:

In a deliberate bid to revive the team’s fortunes, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally appointed Eric Sékou Chelle, a former Mali coach, as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, the country’s senior men’s football squad.

This decision was approved by the NFF Executive Committee at a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday night.

The NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee, meeting on January 2, 2025, recommended Chelle’s nomination.

Following extensive conversations and evaluations, the committee backed Chelle’s qualifications and determined he was the best choice to lead Nigeria’s football squad.

Chelle, who won five caps for Mali during his playing career, has extensive coaching expertise. He formerly managed GS Consolat, FC, and MC Oran before joining Mali’s Aiglons in 2022.

His time with Mali was marked by impressive performances, particularly during the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where his team narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot, losing 2-1 after extra time to the hosts and eventual champions, Côte d’Ivoire, despite leading 1-0 until the final moments of regulation.
