In a troubling start to 2025, Nigeria’s national power grid experienced its first significant collapse, causing a nationwide blackout just ten days into the new year.
The outage, which plunged the country into darkness, is the latest in a series of grid failures, marking the 13th such incident in the last 13 months.
According to sources, power generation levels plummeted dramatically in a short span. By 2 pm, the grid was generating 2,111.01 megawatts.
However, by 3 pm, that figure had dropped drastically to just 390.20 megawatts, signaling a severe disruption.
The Energy Podcast confirmed the grid’s failure, posting, “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.”
Further updates indicated efforts to restore service, with power generation reported at 302 MW as of 2:40 pm, signaling a slow recovery.
As the country grapples with these frequent disruptions, many Nigerians are left frustrated by the ongoing instability in the power sector.
