The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given President Bola Tinubu 48 hours ultimatum to reverse the recent 50% spike in telecoms charges or face legal action.
In a statement, SERAP referred to the rate rise as illegal and urged the government and telecom companies to reverse the price increase right away.
“If the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours, we will take the matter to court,” the organization warned.
On January 20, 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, citing a need to improve service quality amid rising operational costs.
The decision, which came after months of deliberation, was officially disclosed in a statement by NCC Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Muoka.

The commission explained that the tariff adjustment was capped at a maximum of 50% of existing rates, far less than the over 100% increase requested by some network operators.
The move, according to the NCC, aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the telecom industry.
“While the adjustment is necessary to close the gap between operational costs and current tariffs, it will still remain within the tariff bands defined in the 2013 NCC Cost Study,” the statement read.
The NCC also emphasized that the changes would support continued investment in telecom infrastructure and services, ultimately benefiting consumers through enhanced connectivity, better network quality, and improved customer service.
However, SERAP is strongly opposed to the increase, arguing that the hike will further burden Nigerians and exacerbate the affordability challenges faced by millions of telecom users.
The group has vowed to pursue legal action if the government does not act within the next 48 hours.
