Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has alleged that the Nigeria Police Force intends to detain him due to his outspoken opposition to the extension of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure.
Sowore, who arrived at the Force Intelligence Headquarters in Abuja at 9:58 a.m. on Monday, was summoned after posting a viral video accusing police officers of extorting motorists at a checkpoint in Lagos.
During his visit, Sowore faced multiple allegations, including resisting and obstructing public officers, defying lawful orders, cyberstalking, and allegedly attempting to interfere with arrests.
Taking to his Facebook page, Sowore claimed the police were using “rehashed information” primarily pulled from online sources to interrogate him.
“I’ve recently met with a team from the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja, which they called an ‘interview,’” Sowore explained.
“The police relied on recycled information from the internet. When I pressed them about the location of the alleged crime in Lagos, they gave a vague response—something about the airport road.”

Sowore revealed he refused to submit a written statement during the questioning, stating that the police had failed to specify the crime he was being accused of. After a brief pause, he was informed that the authorities were waiting for further instructions from higher-ups.
“It appears their intention is to detain me and send me to Lagos for a show trial,” Sowore said.
“But I’m ready to face whatever consequences come. The real issue here is my public stance against the illegal extension of IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure, a move that I believe is unjust and unnecessary.”
The activist also expressed confidence in the ongoing fight for justice, emphasizing that the struggle for accountability and reform would continue. “We are on the right path, and we will not be deterred,” he concluded.
Sowore’s comments come amid growing tensions surrounding police leadership and governance in the country. The activist’s #RevolutionNow movement has been a prominent force advocating for systemic change.
