Dele Farotimi: I Turned Down Appeals from OBJ and Kukah, Says Afe Babalola

Date:

In a significant move for conflict resolution, Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has decided to drop all criminal defamation charges against human rights activist, Mr. Dele Farotimi. This decision follows the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other respected Yoruba monarchs, who played a pivotal role in bringing the two parties to an amicable resolution.

Babalola, a renowned legal figure and philanthropist, expressed his decision to withdraw the charges in a heartfelt statement, acknowledging the influence of the monarchs and notable Nigerians who appealed for reconciliation. He said, “The Ewi of Ado, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Bishop Matthew Kukah, and many others have come to meet me, urging me to do this. At first, I resisted, but today, my answer is yes.”

He elaborated on his personal stance against corruption and defamation, stating, “I have always defended against corruption. I rejected offers of wealth and ministerial appointments because I did not want anyone to say I gained through corruption. For someone to accuse me of winning cases through corruption was an attempt to tarnish my reputation. However, when I heard the Ooni was coming, I knew I was in a dilemma. There is nothing to gain from Farotimi’s imprisonment or any damages. I’m not seeking more wealth; I am content with what I have. Today, Dele Farotimi is forgiven.”

Reacting to Babalola’s decision, Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, praised the legal luminary for his commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. Obi, through his media aide Ibrahim Umar, expressed approval, saying, “We are pleased that this matter has been resolved amicably. This outcome is a testament to the power of dialogue and constructive engagement. Obi’s intervention was never about asking for forgiveness for Farotimi, but about fostering peace and resolution. Today, the withdrawal of the suit marks a positive outcome and demonstrates Chief Babalola’s commitment to peace.”

Obi emphasised that his involvement was rooted in a desire to ensure all parties could move forward constructively.

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, also weighed in on the matter, commending Afe Babalola for his decision to heed the advice of Yoruba monarchs. Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, issued a statement praising Babalola for demonstrating the values of Omoluabi — respect for tradition and community.

Ajayi added, “Chief Babalola’s decision reflects the ethos of Yoruba culture, and we commend him for respecting the wishes of our respected Obas. His actions have contributed to upholding peace within the Yoruba community.”

This resolution has brought closure to a highly publicized legal battle, highlighting the power of dialogue and respect for traditional leadership in resolving conflicts.
